Spinalonga, the Fortress of Elounda

For the sailors and the sunlovers amongst you. Come along with us to the haunting island of Spinalonga, the old leper colony, made more famous by Victoria’s Hislop’s novel ‘The Island’. Our boat departs from the picturesque fishing village of Elounda, setting of the TV series ‘Who Pays the Ferryman’, where you can sit in one of the tavernas or cafes and watch the local fisherman at work.
A short cruise takes you through the azure blue waters to this now deserted island. It’s a place not to be missed by historians and the curious alike. A guided tour will fascinate you with its long and intriguing history, firstly a stronghold of the Venetians, then inhabited by the Turks, and finally was Europe’s last leper colony until 1954.
Setting sail again our journey takes us to the sheltered cove of Kilokitha. It’s time to soak up the sun, swim in the shallow crystal clear waters and enjoy a delicious BBQ prepared by the captain and his crew.
